How do I know if I've got a vocation?

Everyone’s path in discovering God’s will is different, but three things are important:

  1. Try to deepen your relationship with the Lord by spending time regularly in quiet personal prayer, if possible before the Blessed Sacrament, thinking about all the gifts the Lord has given you and asking Him to show you His will for you.

  2. Find out more - talk to priests or religious who are happy in their vocations, asking them about their life or visit some of the many vocations websites.

  3. Take a step in faith! If after the first two steps you think that you might have a vocation then take a risk—contact the Vocations Director of the Diocese or Religious Order and apply to enter. It’s easy at this stage to be held back by fears—fear of the reactions of family and friends, fear of making the wrong decision and many other fears. It’s important to remember that entering a seminary or a religious order is part of the discernment process, not the final commitment. Those in charge of formation will help you to discover if God is really calling you to the priestly or religious life. You can always leave if you discover that it’s not your vocation, but you’ll never know if you never go!

“Life is not governed by chance, it is not random. Your very existence has been willed by God, blessed and given a purpose! Life is not just a succession of events or experiences. It is a search for the true, the good and the beautiful. It is to this end that we make our choices, it is for this that we exercise our freedom; it is in this - in truth, in goodness, and in beauty - that we find happiness and joy.”

—Pope Benedict XVI

I wish to enclose myself in Your loving Heart as in a desert…
