Feast of Our Lord
In the Epiphany we commemorate the revelation of God’s saving love to the Gentiles through the visit of the Magi to the Child born in Bethlehem. In the first reading from the prophet Isaiah (60:1-6) the prophet speaks of the glory of the Lord rising over Jerusalem and says that the “nations will come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness.” The Gospel tells the story of the visit of the wise men. The star they had seen rising “went forth and halted over the place where the child was…going into the house they saw the child and his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage.” Their offerings of gold, frankincense and myrrh remind us of our need to give our best to God.
