Feast of Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

St Matthew, one of the Twelve Apostles and author of the Gospel of Matthew gives us a portrait of Jesus as the new Moses, giver of the new law.

In the Mass readings the letter to the Ephesians (4:1-7, 11-13) reminds us that “Each one of us has been given his or her own share of grace” and the Gospel of Matthew 9:9-13 recalls Jesus’ words “What I want is mercy, not sacrifice.”
