Feast of St John, Apostle and Evangelist
St John was one of the twelve and the author of three letters, the Fourth Gospel, and possibly the Revelation to John in the New Testament. He played a leading role in the early church at Jerusalem.
In the first reading (1 John 1: 1-4) John gives witness to his experience of Jesus “Something which existed from the beginning, that we have heard and that we have seen with our own eyes; that we have watched and touched with our own hands: the Word who is life – this is our subject.”
The Gospel (John 20:2-8) speaks of Peter and the unknown disciple, traditionally believed to have been John, running to the empty tomb. The beloved disciple enters the tomb “he saw and he believed”.
